" The 4 Humble Abodes (BrahmaVihara)"

This retreat will focus on the 4 Humble Abodes, also known as the Four Immeasurable Minds, which are the qualities of love, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity (nondiscrimination or nonattachment). These qualities are what most parents have unconditionally for their children when they are born. In this retreat, we will cultivate these mental states of mind through specific meditation practices. Through building and expanding these humble homes in our heart we can bring comfort to relieve suffering and bring much benefit to ourselves and others.

This retreat will be broken down into 4 separate sessions.
Each meditation session will focus on one of the "immeasurables":
April 23 @ 9:00-11:30am Meditations on Love
April 23 @1:00-3:30pm Meditations on Compassion
April 24 @ 9:00-11:30am Meditation on Sympathetic Joy
April 24 @ 1:00-3:30pm Meditation on Equanimity

Suggested Self Guided meditation:

Begin by sitting, dropping into the body, with a strong back, soft front, like one needs to stay afloat the in ocean of grief. Use your breathe to inform you and guide you. As you notice the breath; pictures, thoughts, and feelings will arise, just keep returning to the breath. Don't hold onto what you're struggling with, holding on will cause you to sink under the waves. Let go of thoughts, pictures, and narrative ideas about your role in others' lives and just allow the pain to be present and move through you. Notice it in the body and breathe through it. Let the "in" breath nurture you, soaking in the love and light above you, use the "out" breath to let go of negative thoughts and feelings. Each "in" breath nurtures with love and light, each "out" breath lets go. Watch how equanimity builds; we are all here together, different yet the same, all capable of using love, light and compassion to help us let go and let our basic goodness arise. With each mindful breath in meditation, you can build peace and stay afloat through the turbulent waves, moving safely towards the shore.
